Unwanted effects of consuming celery juice, nutritionist says – do not eat it

Blending celery stalks and drinking them is not as strange as it may seem. In fact, celery juice– the liquid squeezed from blended celery stalks can actually be very good for your health. These nutrient-packed green juices not only provide your body with all the vitamins and minerals it needs, but can also help ward off disease and keep your body healthy for a long time. However, since celery juice can provide so many health benefits, are there any negative side effects to be aware of if you drink this juice regularly?

We talked with Mackenzie Burgess, RDNregistered dietitian nutritionist and recipe developer at Fun choices, about the benefits of drinking celery juice, as well as one downside to keep in mind if you regularly enjoy this green juice. One of the main benefits of drinking celery juice regularly is the wealth of micronutrients it provides your body in one simple, green cup.

“The great advantage of celery juice is that it is rich in nutrients such as calciumpotassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and K, Burgess says. – These nutrients are necessary for many important functions of our body.

One cup of celery juice is also a valuable source of calcium (8% of your daily value), magnesium (7% DV) and potassium (14% DV).

“Calcium, potassium and magnesium can help lower blood pressure and was found reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke,” says Burgess.

Unfortunately, when you blend the celery stalks and strain them to make juice, neither does it stretches most of the fibers, according to Burgess. Without fiber and protein, your blood sugar can rise and fall quickly during a meal, leaving you feeling hungrier rather than full and satisfied after a meal.

If you want to reap the benefits of celery juice, Burgess recommends pairing it with a source of protein and fiber to get those macronutrients into your meal and keep you feeling full longer.

“Try pairing celery juice with a source of protein and fiber, such as whole-wheat toast with almond butter or vegetable scrambled eggs,” she says.
