The primary to lose their beginning job

Jones was expected to be on a one-year trial with new coach Brian Daboll while the team figured out its long-term direction at quarterback. But is it can isn’t Jones even starting this season? Tyrod Taylor never played for Daboll in Buffalo, but that doesn’t mean Taylor can’t win the job if new Giants management decides Jones isn’t the long-term answer — and probably never will be.

Inheriting a flawed roster and a messy salary cap, Daboll has already hinted that he might growing pains this year. The smart money remains on Jones to prove he can still be a starter, but the Giants may decide to take a stab at Taylor, especially if reports spread about the Giants’ offense struggling in camp. Jones’ benching would be the most surprising development of any of the possible demotions mentioned in this piece. Stranger things have happened, though, and perhaps Daboll’s patience will wear thin if Jones’ turnover issues persist (his 49 sacks, including a league-high 20 sacks since 2019, are third-most).
