In order for it to start burning, you have to light it. Then every couple of hours, you add small amounts of wood to keep it burning. The same goes for your metabolism! You want to jumpstart your morning with high-fiber carbs and protein, then the whole add small meals and snacks throughout the day to keep the fire burning.”

Don’t start your day the same way added sugarGoodson warns that starting your morning with just any type of carbohydrate can cause your blood sugar to spike.

Even though your body needs carbs for energy, if you eat them alone, they can often cause your blood sugar to spike, causing it to drop later, causing you to crash. When blood sugar drops, people often crave sugar, which sends them on a blood sugar roller coaster for the rest of the day,” she says.

Instead of eating just carbs, suggests Goodson balance breakfast with proteins. “Protein helps you feel fuller faster and stay fuller longer after a meal because it takes the longest to break down compared to carbs and fat,” says Goodson, “and while the thermic effect of food doesn’t burn calories, it does burn some, and protein activates the calorie-burning system.” Thus, adding protein can speed up the metabolic process.

“So many people think they should eat something light for breakfast and save calories for the rest of the day!” It’s metabolic, no, Goodson says. “Instead, the goal is to speed up your metabolism by ‘building a fire’ in the morning and then continually adding small amounts of wood (aka food) to keep it burning throughout the day.”

Instead of eating the smallest meal at the beginning of the day and eating more later, try eating a hearty, filling food for breakfast it will set you up for success the rest of the day.

“And generally, when people start the day with a high-fiber, high-protein breakfast, they tend to eat less at night and avoid some of those evening cravings,” Goodson says.
