Trevor Penning’s demeanor and nastiness as a player were seen as good qualities for him as a prospect, which no doubt factored into him being selected 19th overall. New Orleans Saints in 2022 in the NFL draft. But the Saints saw the downside of their blitzing rookie this week as Penning was ejected from practice after his third fight in three days.

The dustup of Penning and defensive end Malcolm Roach was the final straw on Wednesday, and new head coach Dennis Allen brought both guys back into the locker room.

“We don’t have time for that,” Allen said. on ESPN. “I sent two guys off today and we have to do our job. We have to learn as a team how to compete and how to play, how to train and push ourselves to the limit but still not take it over the edge.

“It’s not unusual for something like this to happen in training camp. We certainly don’t want that to happen. It will be resolved and we’ll move forward.”

The Northern Iowa product blocked the whistle echo in training camp, which is a little different. These training camp controversies serve their purpose in many ways, but at the same time, too many of them can get in the way in practice.

“I think it’s part of my game. It’s just who I am as a player,” Penning said earlier this week. “But I’m obviously working on my technique. I’m trying to get better at playing technique, knocking down blocks. Finishing ability, that’s something I pride myself on, and that’s always going to be a part of my game.”

Saints assistant general manager and director of college scouting Jeff Ireland has high hopes for the offense as he to compare Penning vs. former no. 1 Jake Long earlier this offseason. Penning was in 2021. Finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which is given to the national team’s offensive player of the year. He was the only offensive player named as a finalist. Penning was also named to the 2021 AP FCS All-American First Team and the 2021 MVFC All-Conference First Team.

Penning could become a long-term player for the Saints, but he will have to watch how he does once New Orleans enters the regular season.
