Rams coach Sean McVay downplayed Stafford’s absence from team drills, saying rest was part of the plan.

“It’s consistent with what’s going on,” McVay said Wednesday. “It’s just more, when you really look at the big picture, you want him to operate with as little pain as possible.” I think anytime you play as long and as tough as he is, I don’t know if you’re ever really pain-free, but the goal would be September 8th. some games after that if we earn that opportunity. This is the kind of perspective and general approach we want to have. I don’t know that I would have felt so comfortable with that approach if it weren’t for his experience and knowing how intentionally he tries to keep up with the mental and physical work he can do in his absence. some things in team settings’.
