Nashville council members rejected a draft agreement Tuesday night to host the event in 2024 Republican National Conventioneffectively eliminating the Tennessee capital from contention with Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the next GOP presidential convention.
Tennessee’s Republican governor, Bill Lee, and Republicans in the state legislature have been heavily lobbying to hold a convention in Nashville, however, the city’s Democratic-controlled Metro Council rejected the draft agreement. According to multiple local reports, only 10 councilors voted in favor, 22 against and three abstained.
Milwaukee approved its draft resolution in June, and two weeks ago the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) Local Select Committee, which oversees the 2024 election. convention planning, recommended Milwaukee over Nashville.
The committee will formally introduce all members of the RNC in a closed session on Thursday when the party’s national committee holds its summer meeting in Chicago. All RNC members will vote in public session on Friday on the Site Selection Committee’s recommendation for Milwaukee to host the convention.
Tuesday night’s vote appears to be the final nail in the coffin for Nashville’s chances at the convention. But a source familiar with the selection process for the RNC convention told Fox News after the Nashville council vote that “nothing has changed and the final vote will still be on Friday.”
Both national parties often hold their conventions in competitive general election states. While Tennessee is reliably red in presidential contests, Wisconsin is a major battleground.
Earlier this year, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, withdrew from the 2024 bid. GOP convention.
