Jackie Bradley Jr. assigned to the Pink Sox

Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has been designated for assignment, according to a league source.

Bradley, who was part of the Hunter Renfroe offseason trade that brought the former Sox All-Star and Gold Glove winner back to the Red Sox, hit .210 with a .578 OPS and three homers in his second appearance with the Red Sox.

The move marks Bradley, 32, off the team’s 40-man roster, making room for newly acquired first baseman Eric Hosmer, who is expected to join the Sox in Kansas City.

Bradley will be placed on non-waiver waivers and, if not claimed (likely still owed about $3 million for the remainder of the season), could become a free agent. If he signs with another club, the Sox would be responsible for all of the remainder of his salary, except for the prorated major league minimum.

The acquisition of Tommy Pham at the deadline made Bradley inevitable, and the Sox opted to go with Jarren Duran as the everyday center fielder despite his struggles (.181 with 36 hits in his last 104 plate appearances and minus-5 defensive runs saved). . Alex Verdugo, moved to right field, is minus-two on defense this year. Pham, meanwhile, is a plus-4, which translates to a minus-3 starting field goal total
