According to flight tracking website FlightAware, more than 1,400 domestic flights to or from the United States scheduled for Friday have been canceled as airlines continue to struggle to leave on time this summer.
In addition to 1,482 cancellations, airlines delayed more than 7,000 flights within, to or from the U.S. on Friday
Among US airlines, American Airlines had the most cancellations (263), followed by Southwest with 193 cancellations.
Airlines have struggled this summer with constant flight cancellations and delays that have frustrated customers and lawmakers.
Earlier this week, Democrats introduced the Cash Refund for Flight Cancellation Act during flight disturbances.
Under the measure, airlines would refund customers in cash if their flights were canceled within 48 hours of their scheduled departure time.
“Enough is enough: travelers are tired of wasting their precious time fighting airlines to get legally required refunds,” Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) said in a statement. “And they’re tired of booking flights months in advance, only to be faced with a health scare that forces them to choose between canceling their non-refundable flight or traveling and risking the health of their fellow passengers.”
The flight cancellations and delays come as the airline industry has seen a recovery from the previous pandemic and more people are traveling again as pandemic restrictions and fears ease in the US.
