Didi Gregorius’ time in Philadelphia is over.
The Phillies announced Thursday afternoon that they had released Gregory, the former Yankees veteran shortstop. In a corresponding move, Philadelphia activated Jean Segura from the 60-day IL.
Gregorius, 32, is hitting .210 with a .567 OPS in 63 games this season. He is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, though the Phillies are still on the hook for $5.5 million. $ he is owed for the rest of the season. If a team were to take the flier and sign Gregorius to a stretch, they would only have to pay him the prorated league minimum.
Gregorius never lived up to expectations in 2019. joined the Phillies as a free agent in the offseason. He hit just .230 with 24 home runs in three seasons, a far cry from the 97 home runs and .269/.313/.446 slash line he compiled over five productive seasons in the Bronx.
With Gregorius out of the picture, Philadelphia will likely select 24-year-old Bryson Stott as their starting shortstop.
