Bears running back David Montgomery totaled four special teams plays in his career. He may play more this season.

The team leader seizes the opportunity.

“The funny thing about David is, he was taking some special teams reps the other day and he ended up going, ‘Hey, can i get on the scout team because my reps are over? Can I get on the scout team and take a look at these guys?’” special teams coordinator Richard Hightower said, via TheAthletic.com. “It just speaks to (GM) Ryan Poles and (coach) Matt Eberflus about the culture these guys are building.

The more a player can do, the more opportunities he gets and the higher his salary can be. Montgomery is entering the final year of his new contract, so it’s an important season for him.

“Wherever they need me, I’ll be ready to be there,” Montgomery said. “I’ve never played special teams before. But I’m always excited and excited to learn so I can be better.

Montgomery and Khalil Herbert should catch plenty of passes this season in a heavy offense that will utilize fullback Khari Blasingam.

Montgomery totaled at least 267 touches, 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in his first three seasons.
